A s’more can be vegan, gluten-free or both, but the classic version is not automatically suitable. You need to check the marshmallow, chocolate and biscuit separately, then consider cross-contamination and the preparation area.
Labels and recipes change, so the current packaging is always the final guide. If an allergy is involved, do not rely on an ingredient’s usual recipe or on a general product-category claim.
What needs to change?
| Component | Vegan check | Gluten-free check |
|---|---|---|
| Marshmallow | Choose a clearly labelled vegan product without animal-derived gelatine | Choose one clearly labelled gluten-free when required |
| Chocolate | Check for milk and other animal-derived ingredients | Check ingredients and allergen statements |
| Biscuit | Check fats, milk, honey and other ingredients | Use a clearly labelled gluten-free biscuit |
| Toppings | Check every sauce, sweet and decoration | Check every added ingredient separately |
Choosing vegan marshmallows
Many conventional marshmallows contain gelatine, so they are not vegan. Choose packaging that clearly identifies the product as vegan and follow its storage and heating instructions.
Vegan marshmallows can toast differently from conventional versions. Turn them steadily and allow extra time if needed rather than placing them closer to a flame.
Choosing gluten-free biscuits
Graham crackers and standard digestive biscuits normally contain wheat, so they are not suitable for a gluten-free s’more. Look for a firm, clearly labelled gluten-free biscuit that can hold a warm marshmallow without collapsing.
A square or round biscuit is equally workable. Strength and an easy-to-hold size matter more than copying the exact shape of a graham cracker.
Choosing suitable chocolate
Dark chocolate is not automatically vegan, and chocolate is not automatically suitable for every allergy. Read the ingredients and precautionary allergen statement on the exact product you plan to use.
Choose a portion that fits inside the biscuit and is thin enough to soften against the warm marshmallow.
Avoiding cross-contamination
- Clean the preparation surface before opening ingredients.
- Use clean plates, utensils and skewers.
- Keep suitable ingredients separate from standard biscuits and chocolate.
- Retain the packaging so guests can check the label themselves.
- For a serious allergy or coeliac disease, follow the person’s established medical guidance and contact the manufacturer if a label is unclear.
Important: “vegan,” “gluten-free” and “dairy-free” describe different requirements. One claim does not automatically imply the others.

Vegan and gluten-free s’mores FAQs
Are ordinary marshmallows vegan?
Many are not because they contain gelatine. Look for a clear vegan label on the exact product.
Are digestives gluten-free?
Standard digestives normally contain wheat. Choose a biscuit specifically labelled gluten-free when required.
Is dark chocolate always vegan?
No. Recipes vary and some dark chocolate contains milk or carries relevant allergen warnings. Check the current label.
Can one serving area include standard and allergy-friendly s’mores?
That creates a cross-contamination risk. Use separate, clean equipment and preparation areas appropriate to the guest’s requirements.
