A family s’mores night works best when the adults manage the hot part and children get plenty of choice in the fun part: picking biscuits, choosing chocolate and building the finished treat.
This guide keeps the setup simple, organised and suitable for a cosy night at home, a birthday activity or an outdoor get-together.
1. Choose the right setup
Decide how the marshmallows will be warmed before anyone begins. Use a fire pit, oven, microwave or purpose-made burner only as directed for that equipment. Put any heat source on a stable surface with a clear space around it.
An adult should control ignition, flames, hot trays and skewers at all times. Never leave a flame unattended or add fuel to equipment that is hot or lit.
2. Prepare a s’mores station
Set everything out before introducing heat:
- biscuit pairs
- portioned chocolate
- marshmallows
- plates and napkins
- a clear place for used skewers
- water or the fire-safety equipment recommended for your setup
Keep ingredient packaging nearby so adults can check allergen and dietary information.
3. Give children safe jobs
Children can match biscuit pairs, place chocolate on the bases, choose toppings and name their creations. Adults can toast the marshmallows and transfer them to the biscuits. Let every s’more and skewer cool enough to handle before serving.
Choose age-appropriate portions, supervise children while they eat and take particular care with the sticky texture of marshmallows. This activity is not suitable for unsupervised children.
4. Offer a small choice of flavours
Too many toppings create mess rather than magic. Try a simple three-choice menu:
- Classic: milk chocolate and marshmallow
- Chocolate orange: orange-flavoured chocolate and marshmallow
- Strawberry: milk chocolate, marshmallow and a thin strawberry slice added after heating
Avoid mixed bowls when allergies are present, and use separate utensils and preparation areas where needed.
5. Turn it into an occasion
- Make a blanket den or set up garden chairs.
- Let everyone invent a name for their s’more.
- Use score cards for “best crunch”, “gooey centre” or “neatest stack”.
- Add a film, board game or story once the hot equipment has been made safe.
How many s’mores do you need?
Plan roughly two per person for a dessert activity, then keep a few spare components. Appetite, age and the size of the ingredients will vary, so this is a guide rather than a rule.
